Berlin's specials

Florian Gallenberger's World War II biopic "John Rabe," Paul Schrader's Jeff Goldblum starrer "Adam Resurrected" and Hermine Huntegeburth's adaptation of the German classic "Effi Briest" are among the highlights of this year's Berlinale Special program, part of the 59th Berlin International Film Festival, which runs Feb. 5-15.

Channel 4 worry

In what would amount to a severe blow for Channel 4 CEO Andy Duncan, the publicly owned broadcaster is thought to have lost out in its bid for increased public funding and faces the prospect of being merged with RTL-owned Channel Five, according to a report in the Financial Times.

Bond goes big

Sky Movies viewers will see James Bond in HD for the first time in Britain under a new deal signed with MGM that gives the satcaster rights to 10 HD premieres, including "From Russia With Love" and "Casino Royale." The deal also will make the films available on Sky Anytime, the satcaster's on-demand service.

Echo chamber

Coldplay, Duffy and Jack Johnson are among the first nominees for the Echo 2009, given each year in recognition of German record sales achievements. The news arrived Friday with the announcement of eight of 24 categories, made by the German Phono Academy. The Echo 2009 will be awarded Feb. 21 in Berlin.
