Models, soccer, 'Star Trek' boost ProSieben

Ratings strong ahead of year-end shareholders meeting

COLOGNE, Germany -- Swimwear, soccer and "Star Trek" kept the ratings flying high for German broadcast group ProSiebenSat.1, which easily outpaced competitor RTL Television in May.

ProSiebenSat.1's main channels grabbed 30.1% of the key 14-49 demographic, compared with 29.9% for RTL's networks.

Pro7's in-house catwalking reality hit "Germany's Next Top Model," helped it to a 12.6% share of the 14-49 demo; live Champions League and UEFA Cup soccer matches on Sat.1 delivered a 11.1% market share and a marathon of old "Star Trek" films on Kabel 1 -- timed to coincide with J.J. Abrams' recent relaunch of the franchise -- rocketed the channel to a record 6.4% rating.

The numbers are good news for ProSieben, which has its annual shareholders meeting this Thursday.

RTL didn't lose much ground. Only cable network RTL2 showed a major drop, shedding 0.4% for a 6.3% market share in May.

ProSieben's gains came at the expense of the German public channels, which were battered in the ratings war. ZDF had the worst-ever month in its history, with only 5.4% of Germany's under-50s tuning in. ARD held steady in May but still managed a measly 6.8% share of 14-49-year-olds.
