Directed by Jon M. Chu from a screenplay by Ryan Landels, the film will star Nashville actress Aubrey Peeples as Jem while Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau and Hayley Kiyoko will play the Holograms, as THR exclusively reported.

The film, based on the animated TV series that ran from 1985 to 1988, follows Jerrica Benton and her alter ego, Jem, who fronts the band the Holograms. It's being described as a modern take on the mysterious pop star, and will follow the band through Los Angeles on a music-driven adventure. Ryan Guzman will play Jem's love interest Rio, and Juliette Lewis also has a role in the film.

Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun of SB Projects, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner, Hasbro Studios president Stephen Davis, Bennett Schneir and Chu are producing the project, which is already shooting in Los Angeles.

Known for starring in hit '80s films including Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, Ringwald most recently starred in ABC Family’s drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She's repped by Resolution, Untitled Entertainment and Kraditor & Haber.
