Mondo Guerra Recaps 'Project Runway' Season 10, Episode 11: Designing for Heidi Klum's Baby Line

The contestants also are tasked with taking care of a baby simulator, which prompts a tantrum from one designer, while another's nurturing side comes out.

It’s a battle of the babies this week when Heidi and Tim introduce the next challenge. The designers must create a look for Truly Scrumptuous, Heidi’s affordable line for Babies ‘R Us. Two winning designers—one boy look and one girl look—will have their garments manufactured and sold in stores.

The trusty button bag assigned the remaining six designers their baby gender: Elena, Melissa and Christopher get girls, while Dmitry, Fabio and Sonjia get boys. Following their client consultations at Babies ‘R Us, Heidi sends them back to the workroom where she’s provided materials and notions from her line along with another special surprise.

In the Workroom

The designers get a crash course in parenting when they discover they will each be responsible for a baby simulator. Elena throws her own tantrum at the news, while Fabio shows his nurturing side. Isn’t Fabio such a sweetie?! Dmitry says he isn’t having babies any time soon and Melissa views the experience as a form of birth control.

Heidi joined Tim in the workroom to give the designers some feedback on their looks. Afterwards, she reveals a twist—a companion look must also be created for their babies’ mamas. They get $150 and 30 minutes at Mood for materials and an extra day to pull it all together.

During fittings, Christopher’s mom client treats his looks like a poopy diaper, sending him into a spiral of doubt. After Heidi’s critique, Melissa struggles to inject the fun factor into her child look and is running out of time to create her companion look. On runway day, Melissa is so behind that she asks her mom client to sew buttons and Tim has to call time as Melissa rushes to finish her look. Get it together!

On the Runway

New mom and celebrity guest judge Hilary Duff joins the fun this week!

Here’s what I thought of the looks:

Fabio: I loved the modern twist on his retro-inspired onesie. I liked that it looked like separates but had the ease and practicality of a one-piece. Mom’s look was pretty good as well—it had the same classic-with-a-twist flavor of his boy’s look.

Melissa: The vest was cute but didn’t have enough impact for me. Her white dress missed the mark. It needed to be more child-friendly and practical. Mom looked comfortable but kind of sloppy. Melissa scrambled this week and it shows.

Dmitry: I like the graphic quality of this look and could see a lot of little boys having adventures wearing it. I just don’t think it fit in as well into Heidi’s collection as other designs. Mom looked really effortless but still put together.

Sonjia: She thought about the challenge and delivered the practicality of separates with modern details. The suit/sweat combo was very smart but a lot of fun at the same time. Mom’s look, though cute, reminded me of Melissa’s look from the first episode.

Christopher: Adorable and well-made. I could see a lot of little girls wearing this for a special occasion but it’s definitely not an everyday look. I loved the joyful floral print and classic silhouette of Mom’s look too. They went together without being too matchy-matchy.

Elena: She focused so much on that jacket that the other pieces suffered. The jacket design was special-occasion-like but the denim gave it versatility to dress down. Still, the look overall was a bit mismatched. Mom looked polished and modern, though.

The High Scores

Fabio: Michael liked his modern take on nautical; Heidi loved his look and liked that it was a onesie that looked like separates; Nina said it was very appropriate and practical; Hilary thought he looked like an old-fashioned baby—in a good way.

Sonjia: Heidi said the boy’s outfit was sharp and that he looked like a little man; Hilary liked that he could move in the garments and that it could be dressed up or down; Michael thought he looked polished and modern; Nina said he looked smart and well-dressed.

Christopher: Nina thought it was adorable but not very practical; Heidi said the outfit was irresistibly cute; Michael didn’t think the jacket worked, but liked the dress and headpiece; Hilary thought the dress had great movement and whimsy.

Dmitry: Michael liked how graphic the outfit was but thought it was borderline costume-y; Hilary agreed that it was borderline costume, but she liked it; Heidi thought it was modern and out there; Nina thought he looked like a crayon.

The Low Scores

Elena: Michael said the jacket was well-crafted but that the outfit overall looked like a baby sample sale; Heidi called the jacket a show-stopper but thought the pants were a throw-away; Hilary said she liked the jacket’s collar; Nina disagreed with the other judges and said the jacket was the problem.

Melissa: Heidi loved the vest but thought the dress underneath was too simple and showed too much diaper; Hilary saud the zipper detail on the dress was dangerous; Michael thought that Melissa made mistakes in her fabric choices; Nina said the vest was whimsical but the dress was too serious and impractical.

The Judges’ Decisions

In the end, Christopher and Sonjia were named the winners while Elena was bid auf wiedersehen.

I agreed with the judges’ winning looks, although I thought that Fabio’s neo-nautical onesie was pretty great. Christopher kind of won by default since both Elena and Melissa’s girls’ looks were in the bottom, but he has racked up a lot of wins through the course of the competition. Congrats to Christopher and Sonjia!

Between Elena and Melissa, I thought that Elena’s look was actually more ambitious. I thought that Melissa’s poor time management was going to send her home this week. Goodbye and good luck, Elena.

What did you think? Do you know a toddler that would rock Christopher or Sonjia’s winning looks? Did Elena get auf-ed too soon? Sound off in the comments below!
