'New Moon' rises for E1 Entertainment

Canadian, U.K. boxoffice bonanza for distributor

TORONTO -- "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" opened in Canada to an estimated CAN$11.2 million ($10.5 million) in boxoffice on 685 screens this weekend, and drew another $19.5 million in ticket receipts from 1,100 screens at 499 locations in the U.K. market, Canadian distributor E1 Entertainment reported Monday.

The "Twilight" sequel, released in Canada and the U.K. by E1 via an output deal with Summit Entertainment, set a U.K. boxoffice opening weekend record for a U.S.-produced movie.

The opening weekend for the teen vampire pic, which set a record for boxoffice takings in the U.S., was preceded by "New Moon" breaking Canadian and U.K. records for advance tickets sales (HR, Nov. 18).

"The series continues to delight audiences, breaking multiple records. With such incredible boxoffice numbers the devotion of 'The Twilight Saga's' fan base is very much evident," Patrice Theroux, president of filmed entertainment at E1 Entertainment, commented Monday.

E1 will release the third installment of the "Twilight" franchise, "Eclipse," next summer in Canada and the U.K.
