'Mosque' finds home in Israel, Turkey

TORONTO -- The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. breakout comedy "Little Mosque on the Prairie" is headed to the Middle East.

Canadian producer WestWind Pictures said Wednesday that the sitcom about Muslims in rural Canada will air beginning Oct. 23 on the Israeli satellite channel Stars 3, in English with Hebrew subtitles.

Turkish free-to-air channel Kanal 7 also has picked up "Little Mosque," as did Finland's YLE Teema.

The CBC launched the first season of the Muslim-themed sitcom last January to fantastic numbers. That was followed up by Canal Plus' July purchase of the show for France and French-speaking regions of Switzerland and Africa.

But a sale to the Middle East has proved elusive for WestWind until now.

Mary Darling, the series' executive producer, said the Stars 3 deal means her sitcom will be viewed in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.

The second season of "Little Mosque" bows Oct. 3 on the CBC.
