Movie Extras Arrive on iPhones and iPads With iOS 8 Launch
Watch a 'Ghostbusters' documentary on the go
As more people turn to digital downloads or streaming services to watch the latest films, they're missing out on the special features, deleted scenes, blooper reels and alternative endings that became a hallmark of DVD and Blu-ray sets. Apple has preserved those bonus features through iTunes Extras, a feature available only on Apple TVs and Macs — until today.
With the launch of iOS 8, the new software powering its mobile devices, Apple is making iTunes Extras available on iPads and iPhones. That means customers who have purchased Fault in Our Stars on iTunes can now access an extended version of the young adult romance while on the go. And owners of comedy classic Ghostbusters can watch a one-hour documentary made available in celebration of the film's 30th anniversary.
Apple revamped iTunes Extras over the summer ahead of the iOS 8 launch, making the feature available with the purchase of an HD movie on Apple TV.
IOS 8 was unveiled in June in preparation for the launch of Apple's new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus phones, which become available on Sept. 19. The software also comes with access to HealthKit, a suite of apps that monitor blood pressure and other vital signs, and a family photo feature that allows people to share photos between devices.
IOS will become available to download for free at 10 a.m. PT on Sept. 17.
