Movie Ticket Prices Hit $8.93 in Third Quarter
That's down slightly from the second quarter.
The average cost of going to the movies in the third quarter of 2017 was $8.93, down slightly from the second quarter's $8.95, which marked an all-time high.
That puts the average ticket price for 2017 at $8.90, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners. Last year, the average price for the full year was a record $8.65.
When adjusting for inflation, NATO says ticket prices were actually higher in decades past. For example, the average cost in 1977 was $2.23, or $9.41 when taking inflation into account.
The average ticket price for the third quarter was fueled by a number of R-rated titles, which draw more adults, who pay higher prices than kids. Five of the top 10 movies released between June 1 and Sept. 30 — including September's horror blockbuster It and Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk — were rated R.
