MSG Net takes big bite of N.Y. Emmys


NEW YORK -- MSG Network walked away with 18 wins in the 51st Annual New York Emmy Awards, the most by any network.

The top newscast awards went to four separate channels, with the two evening honors going to WNJU Telemundo 47's "Noticiero 47 A Las Once" and WABC-TV's "Eyewitness News at 5 p.m." for their coverage of the July 2007 steam pipe explosion. The morning newscast honor went to "Good Day New York" from WNYW Fox 5; WCBS-TV was honored for top daytime newscast.

Coverage of the steam pipe explosion on the East Side of Midtown Manhattan also earned Tribune Co.'s WPIX-TV the award for outstanding spot news story, while the Oct. 11, 2006, plane crash that killed Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle led to a win by WCBS-TV for breaking news coverage.

WCBS also won for hard news coverage of a single story for "Red Light Rabbi" by chief investigative reporter Scott Weinberger. Weinberger was laid off last week as part of WCBS's cost cutting. WNYW won for Arnold Diaz's "Shame, Shame, Shame" about a 9/11 insurance fund as well as Diaz's investigation on a home scam and Mary Garofalo's "Fake Inspectors" series in February 2007. WNYW received nine nods.

NYC TV won 12 awards while YES Network won seven including one for the New York Yankees pre- and postgames and Marv Albert for play-by-play work for the New York Nets basketball games.

WCBS-TV anchor Chris Wragge was judged anchor of the year while WNJU Telemundo 47's Andrea Romero was named best weather anchor and MSG Network's Al Trautwig was named best sports anchor.

Actress Lynn Redgrave was honored for her role as program host/moderator of Thirteen/WNETs "Thirteen Setting the Stage."

Also winning awards were WNYW Fox 5 (9); YES Network (7); News 12 Connecticut (6); WXTV Univision 41 (6); WCBS-TV (5); WNJU Telemundo 47 (5); News 12 Long Island (4); WABC-TV (4); SportsNet New York (3); Thirteen/WNET (3); WNBC-TV (3) and WPIX-TV (3). Each of the following received one win each: Bills Television Network; ESPN2;; FSN Network; LX Networks; News 12 Interactive; News 12 New Jersey; R News;; Time Warner Cable; TLC; WGRZ-TV; WIVB-TV; and WXXI-TV.
