MTV Int'l launching pan-Euro high-def feed

LONDON -- MTV Networks International will launch the company's first pan-European high-definition feed next year, offering audiences a mix of kids, music and entertainment shows, MTVNI president Bob Bakish said Tuesday.

With content drawn from MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon, the channel will be operated by MTVNI's emerging markets group, which will produce and broadcast the channel from MTVNI's Warsaw hub. It joins MTVNI's other pan-regional European services: MTV European, VH1 European and VH1 Classic European.

"We believe that the terrific clarity and surround sound aspect of the high-definition medium are a perfect complement to our music, young adult and kids programming," Bakish said. "We are constantly looking for fresh, innovative ways to bring programming to our audiences and actively embrace a multibrand, multiplatform strategy. Launching on HD is the natural next step."

Added Bhavneet Singh, senior vp and managing director of the emerging markets group: "Basing the new HD channel in Poland underlines our recognition of Central and Eastern Europe as an increasingly important market representing the biggest growth potential in the region."

MTV will work with European satellite and cable partners to secure further carriage deals for the channel as HD services roll out across the continent.

Content for the channel includes such shows as "MTV Unplugged," "VH1 Storytellers" and events including the "MTV Europe Music Awards."
