MTV Movie & TV Awards: Adam DeVine, Josh Gad, More Open Show With 'Beauty and the Beast' Homage

Host Adam DeVine channeled the beast, as the movie's star Josh Gad and others, including Rebel Wilson and Hailee Steinfeld, also took part.

MTV Movie & TV Awards host Adam DeVine kicked off the show Sunday night with a tribute to Beauty and the Beast.

DeVine parodied the live-action movie by dressing up as the prince in a pretaped moment — reminiscent of the first moments of the Emma Watson-starring box-office hit showing the prince (Dan Stevens in the movie) before he was turned into the beast — and then appearing onstage as the beast.

Singing a song to the tune of the "Beast and the Beast," DeVine crooned about how TV was added into the mix this year alongside films. He also sang to the tune of "Be Our Guest" before calling Beauty and the Beast star Josh Gad onstage to sing a song about "Logan" — as Logan star Hugh Jackman smiled appreciatively from the audience — to the tune "Gaston."

DeVine's Pitch Perfect co-star Rebel Wilson — dress as Mrs. Potts — also serenaded another Pitch Perfect alum, Hailee Steinfeld (as Belle in her iconic yellow gown), as she danced with DeVine.

The performance included stars such as This Is Us' Chrissy Metz and Get Out actor Lil Rel Howery, who won the award for best comedic performance during the preshow earlier in the night.

Concluding by soaring over the audience holding onto a chandelier, DeVine and company sang "movies and TV" in another nod to the newly rebranded awards show.

Heading into the show, Jordan Peele's racially themed horror film Get Out led all nominees with a total of six, followed by Beauty and the Beast with five nominations. On the TV side, Stranger Things leads with four nominations, including show of the year.

Besides including television for the first time, the fan-voted awards show added several new categories this year — best host, best reality competition, tearjerker, next generation, trending, best musical moment and best American story, which showcases America at its best, open and diverse — and combined the best actor and actress categories into one.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards are airing live from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium. Noah Cyrus and Big Sean are set to perform, while The Fast and Furious movie series will receive the MTV Generation Award, marking the first time that a film franchise will be honored instead of an individual actor. J. Balvin, Pitbull and Camila Cabello will perform their Fate of the Furious soundtrack single, "Hey Ma," for the first time on TV, as part of the celebration of Generation Award, which Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster will be on hand to accept.
