MTV UK Orders Sixth Season of Reality Hit Show 'Geordie Shore'

The news comes just after the debut of the fifth season of the British equivalent of "Jersey Shore," which last year regularly drew more than 1 million viewers.

LONDON - Reality series Geordie Shore, MTV UK’s highest-rated show ever, will return for its sixth season, which will be shot on location in Australia, the Viacom network said late Monday.

Production on the latest season of the U.K. equivalent of Jersey Shore will start in the spring, which is fall season in Australia. It will consist of eight 60-minute episodes that will air worldwide later this year.

In the U.K., the fifth season just started airing Tuesday. The fourth season regularly drew more than 1 million viewers.

That helped MTV UK hit its highest audience figures in five years in 2012. The  network has said it is looking for a record performance in 2013.

Over the course of its four seasons, the show has grown its ratings by 80 percent in the demo of 16- to 34-year olds.

MTV last month also said that Geordie Shore was going global. "Based on the unprecedented multiseason success in the U.K. and initial launches on MTV in Australia, Southern Europe and in the U.S., MTV is extending Geordie Shore to all the network’s regions," the network said then.

The show also has become a social media phenomenon in the U.K. Geordie Shore was the third-most-social TV brand on Twitter in the U.K. in 2012, according to MTV. Trending worldwide on Twitter every week during new episodes, the cast and show social media accounts collectively have more than 7 million followers.
