Pop/rock band 5 Seconds of Summer are set to charge in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week with their self-titled full-length debut album.
Industry sources suggest the set might sell 250,000 copies in the week ending July 27. (The number could end up just shy of 250,000 — but the quarter-million mark is definitely within their sights.)
The group’s Hey Or Hi/Capitol Records album follows their debut EP, She Looks So Perfect, which debuted and peaked at No. 2 earlier this year. It sold 143,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
5 Seconds of Summer would give the Billboard 200 chart its third act in a row to earn their first No. 1, following “Weird Al” Yankovic and fellow Australian act Sia. The latter two debuted at No. 1 in the last two weeks with Mandatory Fun and 1000 Forms of Fear, respectively.
5 Seconds of Summer could become the first Australian band to hit No. 1 since AC/DC’s Black Ice spent two weeks atop the list in 2008 (Nov. 8 and Nov. 15).
Other albums aiming for sizable starts next week — but nowhere near 5 Seconds of Summer — include Common‘s Nobody’s Smiling and Crown the Empire’s The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways. The former might sell around 20,000, while the latter could do 18,000.
