Taylor Swift accepted the first-ever Dick Clark Award for Excellence at the American Music Awards Sunday night, receiving the trophy from Diana Ross and continuing her anti-streaming-service rhetoric in her acceptance speech.
Thanking her fans, who made her the only artist to have three albums sell more than a million copies in a single week, Swift said, “What you did by going out and investing in music and albums is you are saying that you believe in the same thing that I believe in: that music is valuable and music should be consumed in albums and albums should be consumed as art and appreciated.”
Swift also praised Dick Clark, the man whose eponymous company produces the AMAs, calling him “a visionary.”
“He fought for music to be at the forefront of our minds and on our televisions as much as possible,” Swift said. I’m so unbelievably ecstatic that his family chose to honor me and that the AMAs chose to honor me with this.”
The pop star also took a moment to acknowledge Ross, who walked onto the AMA stage to a standing ovation.
“I am blown away to have received an award from Diana Ross, who over the course of her career just stood up for herself so many times in a time when it was not popular for a woman to stand up for herself,” Swift said. “I am so honored.”
Swift was wearing a custom Michael Kors gown when she accepted her award.
The AMAs aired live from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live from 8 to 11 p.m. on ABC.
The 2014 American Music Awards were produced by Dick Clark Productions, a sister company of The Hollywood Reporter.
