‘American Idol’ on the Charts: Carrie Underwood Sees Second ‘Voice’ Bump

ASCENSION: For the second time in four weeks, a performance on The Voice has boosted a track by an American Idol. And once again, it is Carrie Underwood who is the beneficiary. The Voice contestant Holly Tucker chose to sing the religious standard “How Great Thou Art,” and finds herself entering the Christian Digital Songs chart at No. 1. Underwood’s live version of the same song rebounds 43-19 in its 101st week on the chart. The Underwood recording is a former No. 1 on this tally.

Last month, Voice contestant Danielle Bradberry sang “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and took the track to No. 13 on Christian Digital Songs, while sending Underwood’s version soaring 23-5.

YEAR TWO BEGINS: Phillip Phillips’ “Home” begins its second year on the Billboard charts. The song debuted the week of June 9, 2012 and is in its 53rd week on the Rock Digital survey, where it rebounds 15-14 with a bullet. It is a former No. 1 on this chart.

“Home” is still in the top 10 on the Adult Contemporary list, where it holds at No 6 in its 39th week. Phillips has two songs on the AC list; “Gone, Gone, Gone” is up 26-22. On the Hot 100, “Gone” stands pat at No. 57, while climbing 7-5 on the Adult Top 40 chart and continuing at No. 2 on Triple A.

There will soon be another “Gone, Gone, Gone” on the charts. Jennifer Hudson’s new single shares the same title as Phillips’ hit but is a different song. It will be the third separate “Gone, Gone, Gone” to chart, as that was also the title of an Everly Brothers single in 1964, albeit without commas. That triple-“Gone” was remade by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss in 2007.

BITS AND PIECES: Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away gains new strength this week, rising 66-54 on The Billboard 200 album chart and 22-19 on Top Country Albums. The set is in its 56th week on both charts…The fourth single from Blown Away is doing well for Underwood. “See You Again” rises 20-19 on Hot Country Songs and jumps 19-14 to achieve a new peak on Country Airplay… Kelly Clarkson’s “People Like Us” breaks into the top five on Hot Dance Club Play with a leap of 8-4…on that same dance chart, Leah LaBelle’s “Lolita” improves 10-7… Candice Glover’s “I Am Beautiful” is down only one rung in its second week on the R&B Digital Songs chart, sliding 5-6. On R&B Songs, “I Am Beautiful” is down just two places, 13-15… Elsewhere on R&B Songs, “Without Me” by Fantasia featuring Kelly Rowland and Missy Elliott advances 20-17. The parent album, Side Effects of You, spends another week at No. 2 on R&B Albums… Colton Dixon’s A Messenger returns to the top 10 on Top Christian Albums with a move of 11-10.
