Grammy Award-winning singer Mary J. Blige lent her talents to season 11’s American Idol hopefuls, first as a mentor on Wednesday’s episode and as a featured performer the following night.

So what sort of rookie mistakes did this year’s Top 13 make? “Once you’re out there, you can’t think about how you look and you have to learn a song so that you’re not even thinking about the words,” Blige told The Hollywood Reporter after Thursday’s show. “[Also] wanting to hurry to get to the big money note, I just kept telling them to slow down.”
