LONDON – As Amy Winehouse’s seminal album “Back To Black” re-enters the charts hours after she was found dead at her home in London on Saturday afternoon, her father Mitch Winehouse has thanked press and fans for their support as the family await the outcome of a post-mortem examination due Monday.
His comments come as sales of the jazz-soul singer’s Grammy-winning second album “Back To Black” re-entered the charts almost five years after its release.
The album, which contains the critical and commercial hits “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good” and re-entered the charts at number 59, with sales soaring in the few hours between the announcement of the singer’s death and the closure of the weekly chart-gathering numbers.
The numbers are expected to grow through the week, leading to speculation that it could top next week’s charts at number one. Previously unheard material like “Body & Soul,” a duet with Tony Bennett, could yet be released by her music label.
Speaking on Monday morning to the coterie of press gathered outside the 27-year-old singer’s North London home, her father Mitch said that the messages of support and tributes from friends had made the process “a lot easier.”
“I know a lot of you, we’ve been together for five or six years and I know you’ve got a job to do. I’m glad you’re all here anyway,” he said, speaking to assembled reporters and photographers. “And as to you people in the street, I can’t tell you what this means to us. It really is making this a lot easier. We’re devastated and I am speechless. Amy was about one thing and that was love. He whole life was devoted to her family and friends and to you guys as well,” he said.
