Multiple arrests have been made in connection with the deadly nightclub fire early Sunday morning in Brazil.
Brazilian police said Monday that they have made three arrests and were seeking a fourth individual connected to the incident. According to the Associated Press, Inspector Ranolfo Vieira Junior told reporters that the arrests are for investigate purposes and that the detentions have five-day limits. He declined to identify the individuals arrested or the fourth person sought.
Lawyer Jader Marques is quoted in the Zero Hora newspaper as saying that his client Elissandro Spohr, a co-owner of the club, was arrested. The paper states that two members of the band that was playing that night also were arrested.
At least 232 people died early Sunday after a fast-moving fire swept through a nightclub in Santa Maria, a city in southern Brazil. Many of the clubgoers were caught in a stampede as the crowd tried to escape the packed, windowless Kiss nightclub. Inspectors told the AP that the fire started when a band’s small pyrotechnics show ignited foam sound-insulating material on the ceiling.
Funerals for the deceased began Monday in Santa Maria.
