Turns out Elijah Wood is a fan of African music. Who knew? But the Lord of the Rings hobbit and Wilfred star has teamed with Questlove of The Roots’ Okayplayer music site and its Okayafrica sister channel to put his knowledge on blast with a new hourlong mixtape of African tunes that doesn’t disappoint.
Wood spearheads the 50th installment of Okayafrica’s Africa in Your Earbuds artist-curated series that has previously featured such Africa-inspired mixes from Saul Williams, tUnE-yArDs, Rich Medina, BLK JKS, Just A Band, Young Fathers, Petite Noir and others. The collaboration came about after Okayafrica caught wind of Wood’s love of African music, hearing that he frequents record stores in New York City’s East Village like Good Records and the now-defunct Tropicalia in Furs. Wood also deejays occasionally, and in 2005 started his own record label, Simian Records.
Wood’s taste leans to the sounds out of the neighboring West African countries Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana. Check out the track list below and listen on as The Hollywood Reporter exclusively premieres the stream.
