The sprit of Levon Helm, who died Thursday after a long battle with cancer, was certainly felt at the second installment of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival this weekend. Friday night headliners The Black Keys paid homage to the late singer and drummer during their set, bringing out a very special guest for The Band’s 1968 classic “The Weight.”
John Fogerty, of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame, joined Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney and singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach, who in introducing the cover, called Helm “an inspiration.” The three proceeded to deliver a true-to-the-original rendition with just a hint of their own bluesy grit. Fogerty played acoustic guitar.

The Ohio rockers weren’t the only ones to tribute Helm. Los Angeles band Dawes, themselves a throwback to the time of The Last Waltz, performed “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” The Orange County Register described it as “heartfelt” and “admirable.”
“Yesterday was a sad day for bands like us,” said Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith from the stage. “We had to get that one out there.”
