Getty Images“I feel like Donald Trump,” Chris Martin said as he and the rest of Coldplay crossed the stage to loud applause for the Super Bowl 50 Pepsi Halftime Show press conference in San Francisco on Thursday. And just like Trump, Martin got a little carried away in front of the crowd.
When asked what the band’s “Left Shark moment” might be from their upcoming halftime performance, Martin joked, “We’ve got Left Shark, Middle Shark, Front Shark, Back Shark, Two Right Sharks and the reserve shark in case one of the first sharks has a problem, in which case there’s going to be a Pepsi logo flashed onscreen.”
“No viewer at home will have any shark-based trauma,” he promised, before thinking more seriously about his answer. It’s a difficult question to answer. You’re saying which part of our show we’ll f— up terribly.”
As the reporters in the room laughed nervously, the moment was instantly captured by viewers who were watching the live broadcast of the press conference from home.
“The way we’re sort of honoring the past is by asking some of the people whose halftime shows we’ve really loved, and Beyonce’s of course is right up there, I think most people would agree. And so we just felt like asking her would be appropriate.”
The group also unanimously agreed that their favorite Beyonce song is “Single Ladies.” When asked by a reporter if they would please do the famous dance to that song, drummer Will Champion responded that it would “cost too much.”
Given the history of spontaneous Super Bowl halftime surprises, it may be too soon to rule anything out just yet.
