Super Bowl 50: Coldplay Rocks Halftime Show With Beyonce and Bruno Mars

Coldplay led a neon-colored, fun-loving halftime show — which saw Beyonce and Bruno Mars engaging in a dance-off to remixes of some of their greatest hits — when they took the stage in the center of the field at Levi’s Stadium for the Super Bowl 50 halftime show.

Chris Martin opened up the performance singing “Viva La Vida” and “Paradise” while jumping on the stage as gold-clad dancers holding neon umbrellas circled the field. While hyping up the crowd during new single “Adventure of a Lifetime,” Martin introduced Bruno Mars, who took the stage with male back-up dancers as Mark Ronson DJed.

Wearing black leather from head-to-toe and gold embellishments, the troupe danced to “Uptown Funk” before a black-and-gold marching band revealed Beyonce, who was leading an all-ladies troupe in a military-inspired leather jacket underneath a black bodysuit and studded bootie.

While singing her new song “Formation,” Beyonce and her dancers made their way to the stage, where they battled Mars in a back-and-forth mashup that included both “Crazy In Love” and “Uptown Funk.” While on stage, Beyonce almost lost her balance, but swiftly caught her step.

Martin then took to the piano where he sang “Clocks” and “Fix You” as the stage played a montage of past Super Bowl performances. The clips showed old game footage, including performances from Bruce Springsteen, Missy Elliot and Katy Perry, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, U2, Beyonce and Bruno Mars.

Directly following the performance, an ad announced Beyonce’s first headlining stadium tour this summer, the 40-date Formation tour, set to begin April 27.

Beyonce, Coldplay and Bruno Mars then led the performance as the trio sang Coldplay’s “Up & Up” while the band and back-up dancers filled the stage. “Believe in Love” was written in white in the neon-colored stadium crowd to end the show.

To celebrate 50 years of Super Bowl halftime shows, Coldplay said they were going to honor the past, present and future with their performance. “The way we’re sort of honoring the past is by asking some of the people whose halftime shows we’ve really loved,” Martin said earlier in the week.

The Denver Broncos were beating the Carolina Panthers at halftime 13-7. During the first half of the game, which aired on CBS, new trailers for Deadpool, Independence Day: Resurgence, Captain America: Civil War, The Jungle Book, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 and the newly named Jason Bourne debuted. CBS also confirmed the final season for their long-running show The Good Wife and Lady Gaga kicked off the event with her rendition of the national anthem.
