Getty ImagesDrake has cited the R&B singer Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash at age 22, as one of his biggest musical influences. And now, 11 years after her death, the rapper has released his first collaboration with his idol, dubbed “Enough Said.”
Drake, who even has a tattoo of Aaliyah inked on his back, posted the track to his website on Sunday. The single, credited as “Aaliyah featuring Drake,” is produced by Noah “40” Shebib and features unreleased vocals from the singer and her signature ethereal, beat-driven sound; while she croons such lyrics as “Why can’t you talk to me?/Tell me what you need,” the 25-year-old rapper contributes his typically moody verses about grappling with fame (“every million I gain an enemy or a cousin”).
He recently hinted at a project involving his ongoing fascination with Aaliyah, telling U.K. TV personality Tim Westwood back in April that he’d been planning “special things. Great things, man. Great things for music, period.”
Meanwhile, Timbaland, the producer of Aaliyah’s ’90s hits including “Try Again,” has maintained in the media that Drake should not produce an album of new material unless both he and the singer’s other former collaborator, Missy Elliott, are each involved.
