Music icons Earth, Wind & Fire and Nile Rodgers were among the special honorees saluted during the Ebony Power 100 gala Thursday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. An additional nine music stars — including Beyoncé, John Legend, The Weeknd and Chance the Rapper — made the magazine’s 2016 power tally, which also honors such notables as director Ava DuVernay, breakout television star Issa Rae and president of the Nike brand Trevor Edwards.
Cedric the Entertainer hosted the evening, which featured performances by Lion Babe (the single “Wonder Woman”) and Icon Award honoree Rodgers who, with his band Chic, rocked the house with a medley of hits he’s produced over the years before closing the evening with a rousing version of “We Are Family.” Also in attendance were singer Kelly Rowland, director John Singleton, actress Regina King (who presented a lifetime achievement award to fellow actress Cicely Tyson) and award-winning producer Jimmy Jam, who gave the evening’s second lifetime award to Earth, Wind & Fire.
During the gala, Ebony editor in chief Kyra Kyles addressed the significance of the magazine’s Power 100. “We are not helpless,” she said. “We are not hapless. We’ve got the power. Now what we do with it, that’s up to each one of us.”
