Grammy Shutouts: Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift and More Artists Who Didn’t Win Anything

The Grammys featured some surprising outcomes during Sunday night’s ceremony. But while Macklemore, Lorde and Pharrell Williams, who went into the show with a field-leading nine nods, each won multiple trophies, many other high-profile nominees were shut out completely.

Here are some of the noteworthy artists who failed to win a single Grammy Sunday night:

Kendrick Lamar: Kendrick Lamar went into the night with seven Grammy nominations, the second most nods for any artist, but he didn’t win a single Grammy. Lamar was up for album of the year, best new artist and several rap awards but went home empty-handed. But he did deliver a rocking performance with Imagine Dragons as the two mashed up the band’s “Radioactive” and Lamar’s “m.A.A.d City.” Both the band and Lamar were dressed in white and later ended up splattered in red paint after their strobe light-filled duet. Macklemore, who won four Grammys with Ryan Lewis, including beating Lamar in the best rap album category, thought Lamar was robbed, posting a message to that effect on Instagram.

Drake: Drake was nominated for five Grammys this year, including one as part of the team that worked on Lamar’s Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City. He even had two nods in the best rap song category. But the Canadian rapper failed to win a single prize Sunday night.

Taylor Swift: The singer-songwriter went into the night nominated for four awards, including album of the year and best country album for Red. However, she lost the latter category to surprise winner Kacey Musgraves and the former category to multi-award winner Daft Punk, who took home the Grammy for Random Access Memories, which sounds so similar to Red, Swift may have thought she won the award when it was announced, at least according to freeze frames of the telecast circulating online. But Swift didn’t seem too bothered by her losses, praising winner and friend Lorde with the following tweet:

Robin Thicke: Robin Thicke’s song of the summer, “Blurred Lines,” was up for three awards, including record of the year, best pop duo/group performance and best pop vocal album for the song’s eponymous album. Thicke took to the stage with Chicago to perform a medley featuring his hit, but he didn’t have an opportunity to return to accept an award.

Sara Bareilles: Bareilles went into Sunday night’s show up for Grammys in the album of the year and pop solo performance categories, but she failed to win either award. However, the “Brave” singer made headlines for her Katniss-inspired hairdo and her duet with Carole King.

Katy Perry: The pop star made headlines for her music-inspired dress and bewitching performance of “Dark Horse,” but she failed to win either Grammy she was nominated for Sunday night, losing both the best pop solo performance and song of the year awards.
