Last year, Barbie released a collection of 23 dolls, varied in shades and features – from skin tone to hair and eye color. Today, Barbie continues to advocate diversity with the addition of 33 figures with three new shapes: petite, tall and curvy. On Thursday night inside the Sunset Tower Hotel, the brand held an intimate dinner celebrating the iconic doll’s new look.
“I’m really happy that there are these different body types now, because it’s such a better reflection of the world we live in,” said host Amanda de Cadenet, before taking the stage to interview the two special guests of the evening: Gwen Stefani and Queen Latifah.

It was a night of conversations with de Cadenet touching upon a number of meaningful private and career moments for both women — but it all began on a lighter note: “What is your Barbie story?” she asked.
“I just remember Barbie taught me to stick up for others and protect those who couldn’t stick up for themselves, because Barbie was always in danger at my house — I had a big brother,” joked Queen Latifah to a room of attentive listeners. “Barbie was really an opportunity for me to hang out in my room and just create an entire life.”
“I was so into Barbie,” said Gwen Stefani, when she took the stage. “I mean, obviously, obviously I was into Barbie, and I spent hours getting them ready for this story that we were going to maybe play, but we never did. I feel like that’s what I’ve done with my life — just getting ready, ready, ready. It’s not ever about the event, it’s always about getting ready.”

Guests included fashion designer Jeremy Scott and screenwriter Diablo Cody — who each had their own Barbie story to shared with Pret-a-Reporter.
“Gwen was about getting the Barbies ready, but I was the opposite,” said Cody, who has been writing Sony’s upcoming live-action Barbie movie. “I was into the role play aspect, and there were serious soap opera storylines that were playing themselves out.”
For Jeremy Scott, whose Moschino Barbie line famously sold out in less than an hour, Barbie has been the perfect muse: “She’s an icon, and I’ve always seen her as such a positive force. She’s worn every fashion imaginable and has been on top of the fashion scene since day one. And now comes this new and exciting moment for Barbie.”
