It was 10 years ago that modern rock band Fountains of Wayne scored a hit single with “Stacy’s Mom.” Today, the song lives on thanks to American Idol alum Casey Abrams, who gives the radio favorite a jazzy twist.
Abrams re-imagined the song on YouTube channel Postmodern Jukebox, adding a ragtime feel, melodica, tinkering piano keys, scatting and a cool handoff of the bass to Adam Kubota.
The 23-year old season-10 finalist previously covered Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” for the channel, but “Stacy’s Mom” has a special place in his heart. “To be honest it’s one of the only songs I know by heart for some reason,” Abrams tells The Hollywood Reporter. “If I really love [a song], I learn it. … I figured, let’s combine two things I love, which is Fountains of Wayne and jazz.”
