Nippon TV, Japan’s multiplatform entertainment powerhouse, said Friday that it will produce and globally distribute Joe Hisaishi & World Dream Orchestra 2021, a concert featuring the composer’s iconic scores from Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke and other works.
The 90-minute concert will be held and recorded April 27 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theater, and Nippon TV will then sell the worldwide broadcast rights to the show.
Hisaishi is known to film and music lovers worldwide for his work on Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s anime classics Spirited Away, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro and others. He also has composed music for scores of popular Japanese films, such as Takeshi Kitano’s 1997 Venice Golden Lion winner Hana-Bi and Yojiro Takita’s Departures, which won what was then known as the best foreign-language film Oscar in 2008.
In 2017, he started the world tour of Joe Hisaishi Symphonic Concert: Music From the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki, which has been held in Paris, Melbourne, Los Angeles, New York and other cities. He also has collaborated with artists such as Philip Glass, David Lang and Mischa Maisky, and conducted top orchestras overseas, including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and American Symphony Orchestra.
“This musical event marks the first time that the Joe Hisaishi & World Dream Orchestra 2021 concert will be available internationally and we are so proud to be offering the worldwide rights to this special,” said Kenichi Yoda, a producer in Nippon TV’s global business division. “Available as ready-made content, we are confident that Joe Hisaishi’s fans around the world will be eagerly awaiting this performance and will love it as much as his fans in Japan.”
