Jay Z got a little help from Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Usher and the entire Jimmy Kimmel Live studio audience when Tidal washed over the Barclays Center for a special charity concert Tuesday night.
The Brooklyn arena hosted the TIDAL X: 10/20 event, which celebrated Tidal’s one millionth subscriber and was streamed for free on the high fidelity music and video service (Tidal boasted 540,000 subscribers when it was re-launched under Jay Z’s ownership in March).
Jay Z stopped by to discuss the gig on Jimmy Kimmel’s late night talk show, which is currently filming a week of shows from Brooklyn’s BAM Opera House. Though the artist and entrepreneur had a big surprise for everyone in the house; they were all invited to walk on down and enjoy the show.

Viewers at home were treated to a performance of Jay Z’s 2009 hit “Empire State of Mind” and the new collaboration from Usher and Nas, “Chains,” a song that addresses racial injustice and police brutality and was released last week through Tidal.
Other performers on the bill included T.I., Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, Thomas Rhett, Indochine, Nick Jonas, Alessia Cara, Justine Skye and Damian Marley who, it was announced, has become one of Tidal’s artist-owners.
Proceeds from the concert will be donated to organizations “dedicated to advancing positive community relations and effecting systemic change for the development and sustainability of just societies, this inaugural event’s philanthropic focus.” The disbursement of the funds will be overseen by The New World Foundation, a New York-based organization which partners with various philanthropic initiatives. Ticket sales reportedly raised around $1 million.
