J.C. Chasez on the Boy Band Resurgence and Why an ‘N Sync Reunion is ‘Not in the Cards’ (Video)

Even with his ‘N Sync days behind him, J.C. Chasez can still appreciate a good boy band.

“I think that The Wanted put out a great record,” Chasez said. “The One Direction kids — I think they’re a breath of fresh air.”

Sitting down in The Hollywood Reporter’s Cover Lounge, Chasez weighed in on the recent resurgence of boy bands and offered a bit of valuable advice to the newcomers. The 35-year-old, who currently serves as a judge on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew, counts himself a fan of The Wanted’s smash hit single, “Glad You Came.” As for One Direction, Chasez applauds their infectious attitude and “fun” songs.

“All the right things happened at the right time again,” he said of the pop phenoms. “Everybody thinks there’s a formula for victory. You can put the certain pieces in place, but lightning still has to strike.”

“When I first heard [‘Glad You Came’], I didn’t even know it was a boy band. I just liked the song and I think that’s what everybody loves about [The Wanted], that they put out a good song,” he explained. With One Direction, he sees “five young people that are really enjoying the moment and sharing it with everyone.”

While both groups have skyrocketed to the top of the charts and have rabid fan followings to boot, Chasez still has a few words of wisdom to the up-and-coming superstars.

“The best piece of advice I could give to anybody in a group is just respect each other,” he offered. “You might not always agree, but the best thing you can do for yourself is respect each other and keep an open mind.”

“Everybody’s got an idea and everybody thinks their idea is better than the other,” he continued. “But they usually think it’s better because they don’t always use the perspective of what’s best for everyone. They’re so focused on believing in themselves, and there’s nothing wrong with believing in yourself, but there is a point where sometimes you have to be open minded because you’ll actually grow even more that way.”

Is he speaking from experience? One thing Chasez was quick to address is the possibility — or lack thereof — for an ‘N Sync reunion.

“It’s just not in the cards,” he told THR. “I’m sure that everybody in my group has been asked at one time or another — I know I get asked, I know the other guys get asked — but we’re happy with what it was and we’re happy to move on.”

With Kevin Richardson finally signing on for an official and complete Backstreet Boys reunion, plus reports of a possible reunion tour for 98 Degrees (though they were ultimately shut down), it would seem as though the option of reuniting would have at least been discussed – if only between Chasez and his former band mates.

“We really feel like if you’re going to do something like that, it has to be for all the right reasons,” he explained. “Everybody says, ‘Oh you’ll make a ton of money, you’ll get a ton of people to come,’ but that’s not the reason we did what we did in the first place. We did what we did because we believed we had something to offer the entertainment world that was essentially fresh, and until we feel that way again, it’s not gonna happen.”
