Jonas Brothers Breakup: ‘We’re Family First’

The Jonas Brothers have opened up about their decision to call it quits, revealing that it took some time for them to come to terms with problems within the group.

During an exclusive interview on Good Morning America, Nick, Kevin and Joe Jonas talked about the issues that led to the band breaking up, what they each plan to do going forward and what will happen to their planned fifth album.

Nick confirmed that he initiated a conversation with his brothers as they were preparing to leave for their now-canceled tour about some of the problems within the group.

“We’re family first, and that’s always been our main priority and so honesty within what we do as a group was really important,” he said on the ABC morning show. “In a nutshell, I said, ‘I feel like we’ve had some complications within the new group for a long time without addressing them. I think this train will fall off the tracks without getting real about some of the limitations and some of the concerns that we may feel as individuals and within the group.’ It was a tough conversation, I’m not gonna lie, and it was the first time we really had that real conversation and it was a few days of working through it. And now we’ve all come to a place after a lot of time thinking about it and talking about it together, where we feel like we’re best suited to do our own individual things, all things we’re passionate about, and choose to be brothers first.”

Joe added that one of those “complications” was the music.

“For us, we held onto it for so long and at one point, a year later, we still felt like it was starting to get stale to us,” he said.

But he noted that there were other issues: “It was just individual things that we were butting heads about, whether it was a way to set up the music video to even personal opportunities, and at some point we decided that it was best to finish this and support each other on our own adventures along the way.”

That process of moving forward will not include releasing the group’s fifth album, which Kevin explained would not be completed.

Instead the brothers will release four of the unreleased songs from the album as well as 10 live songs from their summer tour, Kevin said, giving this music to their fans as a gift.

Nick added that he appreciates their fans supporting them throughout their career and understanding their decision to disband.

“We have the best fans in the world and have for our entire career, so we thank them for that, and thank them for really understanding this move for us,” he said.

In terms of their individual futures, both Nick and Joe plan to continue to make music on their own and pursue acting opportunities while Kevin is getting into the business side of the entertainment industry, explaining that he’s “in the first round of an entertainment fund that will position brands to target millennials.”

Both Nick and Joe acknowledged that while they’re excited about moving forward as individuals, there’s a sadness that comes with no longer being a group.

Said Joe, “We know it’s gonna be sad for a lot of people, but for us we’re looking toward the future and … there’s a heaviness that comes with talking about something like this.”
