Justin Bieber and Leonardo DiCaprio went head-to-head last week over a necklace during a live auction at the Cannes Film Festival’s annual amFAR Cinema Against AIDS event, held at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes.
The item in question? A Bulgari gem-laden stunner, boasting a 13.05 carat aquamarine stone, surrounded by the brand’s signature snake encrusted in 19.12 carats of pave diamonds. Donated by Bulgari, the piece is part of the Serpenti line, first commissioned by amFAR co-founder Elizabeth Taylor. The former first lady of France and amFAR ambassador Carla Bruni-Sarkozy donned the sparkler for the evening, which included a fashion show, dinner and afterparty, as well as performances by Lana Del Rey and Robin Thicke.
The final two bidders, DiCaprio and Bieber battled it out for the Bulgari beauty (valued at €150,000) during the lively auction, as guests including Sharon Stone, Jessica Chastain, Harvey Weinstein and Adrien Brody looked on. DiCaprio placed his final offer of €350,000 (roughly $476,000), only to be outbid by the swag-loving Bieber, who intimated that he wanted the necklace for his mother — and came in with the winning €400,000 ($545,000) offer.
DiCaprio may have left without the necklace, but the night was still a success for the philanthropic actor, who offered one lucky winner the chance to accompany him into space aboard Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo in 2015 — the highest bid was €700,000 ($950,000).
In total, the event raised $38 million.
