Justin Bieber is back.
The pop star danced, flew and broke down in tears after he returned to the VMA stage for the first time in five years for the first live performance of his new single “What Do You Mean.” The track, off of Bieber’s highly anticipated new album, was released on Friday. The video for the song is set to premiere on Vevo after the VMAs.
Bieber last performed at the VMAs in 2010, when he delivered a medley of “Baby,” “Somebody to Love” and “U Smile.”

His return performance at the 2015 awards show began without any introduction, picking up right after the commercial break with the pop star silhouetted against a tilted square of blue lights, beginning to croon his new song. As the lights turned red, Bieber stepped into the spotlight.
The visually stimulating dance-heavy performance included the pop star, clad in all black, moving with dancers wearing all white. A screen behind Bieber displayed raindrops and various graphics as overhead shots presented a different look at the performance.
Toward the end of the song, Bieber spent some time touching the hands of fans in the audience. A voiceover from Bieber before the end of the song talked about how “life is a journey” and “when you fall it allows you to get up.” Bieber also told viewers to believe in faith and find their purpose.
At the end of his performance, he flew over the crowd. After the song ended, he put his hands over his face, appearing emotional and bent over, looking like he was crying.
The 21-year-old went into Sunday night’s VMAs nominated for three awards for his “Where Are U Now” collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo.
