TORONTO – Justin Bieber was a no-show Sunday night at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto. But the pop sensation, who’s causing friction abroad with his bad-boy persona and run-ins with Hollywood neighbors, is still tops with fellow Canadians.
Bieber on Sunday night picked up the favorite artist trophy at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, voted on by ordinary fans.
He beat out homegrown competition from fellow Canadians Carly Rae Jepsen, deadmau5, Drake and rockers Marianas Trench, which earlier in the evening won for best pop video of the year for “Desperate Measures.”

Marianas Trench also picked up the favorite video award for “Stutter.”
And the favorite artist or group was won by crossover country star Taylor Swift, who was on hand for her first appearance at the MMVAs as she brought her Red tour to Toronto for a two-night stand on Friday and Saturday.
In the international video of the year competition, Demi Lovato and her “Heart Attack” video beat out strong competition from Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors,” Ed Sheeran‘s “Give Me Love” and Nicki Minaj‘s “Va Va Voom.”
The best international video by a Canadian artist went to MMVA darling Avril Lavigne for “Here’s to Never Growing Up.”
She beat out contenders like “This Kiss,” by Jepsen and Bieber and Big Sean’s “As Long as You Love Me.”
The Canadian music video showcase included performances by Phillip Phillips, Lovato, Sheeran, Lavigne and co-host Psy, who closed out the MMVAs by performing “Gentlemen.”
Also on stage to present awards in Toronto was Pretty Little Liars’ Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Austin Mahone, Cody Simpson, Glee’s Naya Rivera and Pitch Perfect’s Brittany Snow.
The MMVAs aired on MuchMusic in Canada and Fuse in the U.S.
