Four months ago, Justin Timberlake accepted U.S. Marine Cpl. Kelsey DeSantis’s YouTube invitation to the Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Richmond, Virginia. Saturday night, he followed through on that promise.
DeSantis, who said her sassy YouTube video was inspired by a similar video invitation sent to Timberlake’s Friends with Benefits costar Mila Kunis, asked the singer to be her date, and later challenged him to a dance-off.
“My friends keep saying, ‘Dance-off!’ They know about my skills,” DeSantis told Access Hollywood as the ball approaced. “I honestly don’t think he’ll be able to keep up with my group of people.”
The In Time actor wrote on his blog Sunday about the night, explaining he knew it would be an evening he wouldn’t forget, but he didn’t know how much the night would move him.
First Timberlake met his date and they made their way to the Greater Richmond Convention Center’s ballroom. Timberlake took photos and shook hands with officers, then sat down with DeSantis, 23, as they waited for her friends to arrive.
“She seemed to me to be so humble and honest… very cool,” Timberlake wrote. “She simultaneously seemed like she was nervous about the whole evening and if I was going to enjoy myself. ‘Are you ok?’ she asked 2 or 3 times. ‘I hope you are having fun. I know you will once my crew of friends get here to the table.’ I have to tell you, it’s not every day that I meet a 23-year-old girl and she’s more worried about if I’m having fun or if I’m comfortable.”
“It hit me all of a sudden that these were the type of people that look after us and our freedom,” Timberlake continued. “Humble, concerned for others before themselves… this was the type of person our Marine Corps was building. I was really blown away.”
Timberlake said he had fun with her “kickass” friends, joking, laughing, eating, drinking—and even dancing a little. But the evening’s celebration was not without its serious moments.
“I was truly moved,” Timberlake wrote about watching a video tribute for the U.S. Marines. “I felt so proud to be there. I felt like I was getting a chance to be among my heroes. It’s funny too, because a lot of them are SO much younger than me.”
Timberlake didn’t say whether the night took a romantic turn, however. But we’re sure DeSantis enjoyed her evening with the “Sexy Back” singer.
Kunis, meanwhile, is planning to attend a Marine Corps Ball with Sergeant Scott Moore next week on November 18, in Greenville, North Carolina.
