“I think I was afraid to go into this because I was like, ‘well, there’s probably going to be more frivolity to it,'” said Trolls actor and songwriter Justin Timberlake of his hesitations around signing on to the film during The Hollywood Reporter‘s Songwriter Oscar Roundtable.
Timberlake soon had a change of heart when thinking of the experience of his two young goddaughters saying, “what women must go through from such a young age of being ashamed of their body, and ashamed of their appearance,” and how important it was that the female protagonist in Trolls, is a troll. “For young females to get to see that that’s not frivolous at all.”
Timberlake turned his discussion to using art and music to connect, saying, “we could all at this table go, oh man the summer of whatever, and we could come up with the song that accesses those memories, because we used it to connect.”
