Kanye West Says He’s Trying to Arrange a Meeting Between Colin Kaepernick, President Trump

Kanye West: rapper, record producer, fashion designer and now … political mediator?

West says he has reached out to Colin Kaepernick in hopes of bringing the controversial athlete to Washington for a meeting with President Donald Trump, the artist revealed Monday in a TMZ interview. 

Kaepernick has drawn criticism from Trump for kneeling during the national anthem as a protest against racial injustice in America when he was a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. The NFL free agent’s new ad campaign with Nike for the 30th anniversary of the company’s “Just Do It” slogan has ignited a firestorm of controversy, with Trump being one of Kaepernick’s most vocal opponents.

In a reaction to the campaign, Trump tweeted, “What was Nike thinking?” and has called for the NFL to “fire” any player who takes a knee during the national anthem, referring to the protesting players as “sons of bitches” during a rally in Alabama last year.

It’s no secret that West is a dedicated supporter of Trump. On the season 44 premiere of NBC’s Saturday Night Live over the weekend, the rapper sported a Make America Great Again hat and followed with a post on Instagram the next day, which received a fiery response from Lana Del Rey. 

“We never give up on anyone,” West told TMZ’s Harvey Levin in the interview. “We keep having the conversation until the conversation turns to love.” He did not mention if either Kaepernick or Trump is open to the idea of a meeting.
