Morrissey has ditched a gig in Reykjavik because the venue’s management wouldn’t take meat off the menu.
The former Smiths frontman was set to play Harpa Concert Hall in the Icelandic capital, but he’s pulled out “due to the refusal of management…to sell only vegetarian food on the night of the projected Morrissey show,” a message on the fansite True to You explains. Apparently no other venue in Reykjavik was available.
In true Morrissey form, the singer let rip in a more personal message. “I love Iceland and I have waited a long time to return, but I shall leave the Harpa Concert Hall to their cannibalistic flesh-eating bloodlust,” he said.
It would seem someone at the venue didn’t get the “meat” memo. Morrissey is a staunch animal-rights activist, and wherever he performs in the world, promoters and venues are instructed to ensure the site is a meat-free zone. The singer, whose second album with the Smiths was titled Meat Is Murder, won’t play festivals if burger stands are doing business nearby.
Moz has canceled various concerts in recent years for a shopping list of reasons, including poor health and a missed flight. He took an early shower when he was heckled during a show last November in Warsaw, Poland. His 2015 touring itinerary includes a bunch of recently announced U.K. dates.
