The Strokes’ new video for “Under the Cover of Darkness” is their first since 2007 and features the band dressed in vintage duds and rocking out in Jersey City’s landmark Loew’s Theater, which opened its doors in 1929.
Shot by Warren Fu, who’s worked with the band before, directing an alternate clip for “You Only Live Once” off of 2006’s First Impressions of Earth, as well as singer Julian Casablancas, the video’s use of low light and faded colors brings to mind the tone of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. The worn walls are contrasted by the band’s clean look, with guitarist Albert Hammond, Jr. and drummer Fabrizio Morretti sporting fresh hair cuts.
All five members, which also include guitarist Nick Valensi and bassist Nikolai Fraiture, recently spoke with The Guardian about the band’s tumultuous past which brought them close to a break-up. Said Hammond of their taste for sex, drugs and rock-n-roll: “It’s funny… you don’t want to live in cliche but it’s just like, ‘Nope, that was it.'”
The Strokes’ new album, Angles, will be released on March 22.
