The brouhaha all got started with Nicki Minaj‘s acceptance speech at Sunday night’s 2014 BET Awards after winning Best Female Hip-Hop Artist for the fifth year in a row, letting Iggy know she’s got her eye on her without looking in her direction. In the hip-hop world, that’s known as “throwing shade.”
Kicking off her rant with “What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it,” adding, “No, no shade. No, no no shade,” the Internet was quick to assume she was referring to rival and fellow nominee Azalea and the rumors that some of her rhymes are ghostwritten.
Minaj took to Twitter yesterday to clarify the “no shade” and speak on female artists with a series of tweets.
“The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different. I will always take a stance on women writing b/c I believe in us!”
“I believe we’re smart enough to write down our own thoughts and perspective, just like the men do. I’ve been saying this for 5 YEARS.”
“I’ve congratulated Iggy on the success of Fancy, publicly. She should be very proud of that. All the women nominated should b proud.”
“That will never change my desire to motivate women to write. Our voices have to be heard. I hope I inspire up & coming females to do that.”
Iggy responded to Nicki’s diss and subsequent Twitter clarification with a lengthy Instagram post of her own. “I have to say the general explosion of pettiness online is hard to ignore,” said the Aussie rapper. “If I had won the BET Award that would’ve been great but it wasn’t my year & I don’t mind — so you shouldn’t either.
“Generally speaking I’m unbothered by anything that ‘happened’ at the BET Awards and just feel worn out by everyone trying to make me have wars with people all the time. I hate to see everyone exhausting themselves on my behalf over things that I’m still not 100% sure even exist & don’t matter. Just let it go.”
Only last year rapper Ransom claimed to have ghostwritten for Nicki Minaj. She shut down that rumor real quick when TMZ asked her about it: “I’m undisputed because I’m the only female rapper that [since] day one, I don’t need no mother—in’ ghostwriter.”
