To think that Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra might have forgone entertainment for a career as an engineer is perhaps as unbelievable to awestruck Americans as the fact that she can actually sing is to Indians. But spend 15 minutes with the 31-year-old beauty, and it becomes almost instantly evident that Chopra can do just about anything she sets her mind to.

Music industry veteran Jimmy Iovine certainly saw that when, after first meeting Chopra, he quickly locked up a recording contract for her with Interscope/Universal. Representation with CAA followed, which helped lead to other international crossover projects. Among them: “Exotic,” a single featuring Latin rapper Pitbull (with requisite ultra-sexy island-themed music video), a forthcoming album produced by RedOne (Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez) and a speaking role in the animated movie Planes, out today.
Chopra is a household name in India — a celebrity on par with a Jennifer Aniston or Julia Roberts — yet much to our surprise, she remains charmingly humbled, grounded and open. She’s also looking to cross a couple more wide-eyed dreams off her to-do list. Witness her drive for yourself in the interview above.
