People are taking Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy with varying degrees of seriousness, but — love him or hate him — Rage Against the Machine was mocking the businessman’s political aspirations 16 years ago.
In the seminal rap-rock band’s Michael Moore-directed video for “Sleep Now in the Fire,” where a money-hungry dystopia is illustrated though bogus TV shows like Who Wants to be Filthy F#&%ing Rich and other satirical scenes, the band plays in front of the New York Stock Exchange and eventually shuts it down. But in one shot, the clip shows a Donald Trump presidential supporter, synced with the lyrics, “I’ll jail and bury those committed / And smother the rest in greed.”
Before you start thinking that Rage Against the Machine had prophetic powers (though the might have still), note that Trump had a short-lived presidential campaign with the Reform Party from Oct. 1999 to Feb. 2000. (Pat Buchanan wound up getting the nomination instead.)
