Kesha makes her documentary directorial debut with Rainbow – The Film, to be released Aug. 10 by Apple Music.
The film features never-before-seen footage of the pop star in a particularly dark time of her life.
“I hope this film inspires others to never give up even if you feel full of hurt or lost, because after the storm comes a rainbow,” Kesha said in a statement obtained by Billboard. “Depression, anxiety and mental illness are things we all need to talk about more, and there is no shame in asking for help. Making the decision to work on yourself is the bravest thing you can do.”
The Magic Seed Productions film will debut on the one-year anniversary of the release of the singer’s 2017 album of the same name.
Kesha wrote and produced Rainbow, which focuses on resilience and healing, all while battling producer Lukas “Dr. Luke” Gottwald in an ongoing high-profile lawsuit.
The pop star claimed Dr. Luke raped her and gave her drugs against her will, resulting in a years-long, $50 million defamation suit filed by Dr. Luke.
Making the album was a cathartic experience, Kesha said, helping her find “even deeper healing.”
The singer directed the documentary alongside Kevin Hayden and her brother, Lagen Serbert, a filmmaker who has helmed a number of Kesha’s music videos. The trio chronicled the singer’s private life on tour and in the studio with a series of “psychedelic vignettes.”
Subjects of other docs released by the streaming platform include Pink, Harry Styles and Clive Davis.
Rainbow – The Film will be available for streaming exclusively on Apple Music.
“I hope this film helps bring light and love to everyone,” Kesha said.
