Vesta Williams, the R&B singer who had several hits in the 1980s and early ’90s, was found dead in a Los Angeles hotel room on Thursday. She was 53.
Los Angeles County coroner’s Capt. John Kades told the Associated Press that the singer, who recorded under her first name only, could have died from a possible drug overdose. An autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Williams was born in Coshocton, Ohio in 1957. She had six songs reach Billboard’s US R&B chart, including Once Bitten, Twice Shy, Sweet, Sweet Love, Special and Congratulations, which also charted on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989.
Her last album, Distant Lover, was released in 2007.
She also acted, appearing in the TV series Sister, Sister and director Mario Peebles‘ 1993 western, Posse.
