Rodney Shealey has been upped to executive vice president for urban promotion at Def Jam Recordings, it was announced by label CEO Steve Bartels.

In his new post, Shealey will oversee all Def Jam urban promotion activities, including rolling out new record releases to all urban radio formats, including mainstream and urban AC. He will coordinate the urban promotion department’s activities with all music formats and liaise closely with all internal department heads. He will be responsible for introducing, developing and breaking new artists, as well as continuing to build Def Jam’s roster of established artists.
“I am so proud of all Rodney’s accomplishments and this well-deserved promotion,” said Bartels. “In the time that Rodney has led the department, he and his team have been responsible for 15 #1 records, as well as championing and breaking new artists in that process. I look forward to his continued growth, strength and energy in leading the way forward in continuing to achieve chart accolades while nurturing and fostering our intense artist development strategy.”

The veteran promotion executive served as senior vice president, promotion, at the former Island Def Jam Music Group since 2011. Prior to that, he was svp promotion at Virgin Records, starting in 2003. He also served as svp promotion at Epic Records under the late Polly Anthony. Shealey was named senior urban promotion executive of the year at the annual 2013 S.I.N. (Street Information Network) Awards.
