Things got a little esoteric on The Simpsons last night, now in its record-breaking 23rd season on Fox. The episode “A Totally Fun Thing That Bart Will Never Do Again” paid homage to David Foster Wallace and his famous book of essays, A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again. On the show, Bart boards a luxury cruise only to find out it’s not all it’s cracked up to be — just as Wallace wrote about in his famous essay.

Adding to the cool-cred of the Foster Wallace-themed episode were two hip musical references: At the beginning of the show, an apathetic Bart faces yet another week of school to the strains of “Boy From School,” a 2006 single by U.K. dance act Hot Chip.
Then, at episode’s end, things become a little less bleak as the whole Simpsons clan slides down a snowdrift with penguins to the song “Winter’s Love” by Animal Collective, Stereogum notes.
