While it marked her first time on the daytime talk show in four years, the singer purposely avoided talk shows and did little promotion for her 2017 album Reputation.
“With that album, I just basically wanted to make music and not explain it,” she said of Reputation. “I am having fun being back here. It’s really great to be back here.”
“I think as a songwriter, I do enjoy communicating about what I’ve made. I really do like that part of the process,” she continued. “But I also just feel like with my career, I want to do what feels right at the time. At that time, I coined this phrase, ‘There will be no explanation, there will just be reputation.’ Cause I am dramatic.”
Swift also discussed the Easter eggs she put in her new music video “ME!” with Brendon Urie. “I like to plant Easter eggs in a video that will be a lyric from unreleased music or a little hint or a little wink to what’s coming in the future,” she explained. “It’s just been really fun to expand the musical experience past just listening to a song.”
Many of Swift’s fans are “excellent,” she said, at figuring out the meaning of the clues, though she did share the one theory the fan base has been most off about.
“There were some fans that thought I had something to do with Avengers: Endgame, which I would’ve loved to have been asked, but I wasn’t asked to be in it at all,” she said. “We had the single coming out the same day and I have a song that was called “End Game” and they were like, ‘Oh my god, she’s gonna defeat Thanos.’ I let everyone down again.”
Swift later spoke more in-depth about the “ME!” video, which opens with Swift and Urie fighting in French. While the singer didn’t explain the hidden meaning behind the scene, she confirmed that the use of French is an Easter egg.
“I’ve tried to learn French several times in my life because I think it’s a really beautiful language,” she said. “I definitely made sure that I had native French speakers on set, cause I didn’t want to butcher the language of love.”
Swift also spoke about her new kitten Benjamin Button, whom she met on set of the music video.
“He was a little cat actor,” she said. “They show up with this little kitten and his handler is like, ‘Do you want to hold him first?’ I was like, ‘Absolutely, I do.’ And so they hand me this tiny cat and I never really experienced a cat that the second I held this little kitten, he started purring like a motor.”
“I was like, ‘OK, whose cat is this? You’re really lucky, whoever owns this cat.’ And the girl was like, ‘Actually he doesn’t have a home,'” she recalled. “My eyes turned into hearts and I just immediately was like, ‘I can’t think about anything else.”‘
The singer continued to talk about her love of cats in the following segment when she briefly spoke about her role in the upcoming film adaption of Cats.
“We all went to cat school,” she said about the cast of the film. “All of my dreams came true on the set of this film.”
“They were like, ‘You can come to set as much as you want’ and I ended up being there everyday for four months,'” she added.
DeGeneres then asked Swift if her upcoming seventh studio album was complete. “Yeah, unless I write something else then I’ll just probably put it on the album,” she said.
She also confirmed that she is in the process of filming a new music video. When DeGeneres said that she should be in the music video, Swift responded, “That would be a dream. Would you want to do that?”
“I don’t know. I’ll think about it,” she joked. After a brief pause, she said, “OK. Yeah, I’ll do it.”
Swift’s appearance concluded with a game of “Burning Questions.”
DeGeneres kicked off the game by asking Swift the title of her next single, though she refused to answer the question.
Swift was next asked what she does in the middle of the night when she can’t sleep. “I go downstairs and rummage through the kitchen and eat whatever I can find and it’s really less like a human being and more like a raccoon in a dumpster,” she answered. “The next morning we walk downstairs. We’re like, ‘What happened here?’ I don’t remember.”
She also answered that her favorite television shows are Killing Eve, Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey and Queer Eye. Other topics she covered were her favorite curse word, her first kiss, what she brings to a dinner party, her favorite holiday, her favorite vacation spot and her favorite movie. She also confirmed during the game that she left an Easter egg during her appearance on the talk show.
When asked what the most rebellious thing she did as a teenager was, she responded, “Probably when I put Joe Jonas on blast on your show. That was too much.” The comment was in reference to an appearance she made on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2008. During the episode, she told the viewers that Jonas had broken up with her during a 27-second phone call.
The game concluded with Swift being asked to list three words to describe herself and she chose curious, cat-lover and romantic.
