Taylor Swift, One Direction Named 2013’s Most Charitable Stars

Taylor Swift and One Direction are 2013’s most charitable celebrities, according to social change organization DoSomething.org.

The country-pop singer tops the sixth annual Top 20 Celebs Gone Good list for the second year in a row, as she turned her 24^th birthday into a gift for others by quietly donating $100,000 of her own money to The Nashville Symphony. She also joined Prince William and Bon Jovi on stage for an impromptu performance of “Livin’ On a Prayer” at the Winter White Gala in London to help homeless youth.

Just behind her is One Direction, who kicked off the year by volunteering in Ghana with U.K. charity Comic Relief. Harry Styles and Liam Payne also raised more than $800,000 through the fundraising platform Prizeo for Trekstock, a London-based nonprofit that supports cancer research.

“It’s pretty amazing that the top two spots on the list are held by celebrities under age 25,” said Naomi Hirabayashi, CMO of DoSomething.org. “For the first time, 50 percent of the list is age 30 or younger. This rising generation is using their money and star power for good.”

Coming in third is Paul Walker, whose passing brought worldwide awareness to his philanthropic efforts. On the day of his death, he co-hosted a charity event for Philippines Typhoon victims, and Universal recently announced that a portion of the proceeds from DVD sales of Fast & Furious 6 will benefit Walker’s Reach Out WorldWide, which helps with disaster-relief efforts.

Other stars’ disaster-relief efforts helped them earn a spot on the annual list: Carrie Underwood and Oklahoma Thunder forward Kevin Durant supported those affected by the tornadoes in Oklahoma earlier this year, and Justin Bieber recently raised more than $1 million for those affected by the tragic typhoon in the Philippines. Alicia Keys also visited survivors in the Philippines and spent time at the Villamor Air Base talking to young survivors and distributing crayons and coloring books.

The list also recognizes those whose activism isn’t with a partner organization, but inherently part of their work. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis challenged the hip hop community to create a culture of acceptance with their hit “Same Love,” earning them the MTV’s Video Music Award for Best Video with a Social Message.
