Tenacious D Festival Supreme - H 2013
Alec StricklandJack Black and Kyle Gass of Tenacious D promised us they would, “shake the heavens and bring this town to its knees” and we have to admit, their inaugural Festival Supreme, held Oct. 19 amid the weathered wood pilings of Santa Monica Pier, lived up to both its hype and name. Audiences may not have been on their knees necessarily, but they were certainly slapping them, during this jam-packed day of music and comedy.
The line-up was awe-inspiring and featured nearly everyone working in the upper echelons of the comic stratosphere strutting their stuff on three separate stages where they mixed rocking jams with goofy hilarity. In other words, a perfect day at the beach.

The numerous close-up Jumbotron shots of Princess’ lead guitarist’s sweat-beaded chest hair. That would be SNL alum Maya Rudolph’s Prince cover band.

Will Forte’s James Ingram medley, followed by a nuanced, heartfelt and sexually graphic description of his love affair with Jason Sudeikis, which brought Sudiekis himself out for a surprise onstage cameo.

While endless, bottlenecked lines and an intimidating Fire Marshall presence kept the tent at capacity most of the night, Tig Notoro, Patton Oswalt, Demetri Martin, Hannibal Burress, Beardy Man, Dynasty Handbag, The Abe Lincoln Story, Sasquatch and The Angry Back-Up Singer, were all said to be stellar.

Neil Hamburger’s “One Man Tent,” where the greasy-haired, bespectacled lounge act spit, swallowed and belted out one-liners in a venue the size of a large closet. That’s right, he performed for one cowering audience member at a time.

Unexpected Brit swap: Billy Idol took the stage instead of Eric Idle.

Speaking of Brit-wit surrealists, the Might Boosh showed the Americans how it’s done — elevating the event to high theater with multiple costume changes, outlandish wigs, weird hilarity and true vocal and instrumental chops. Fans gleefully cheered for the hip-thrusting funk jam performed by the act’s beloved “Old Gregg” character, a hermaphroditic Merman with seaweed dreads and a relentlessly positive attitude.

Zach Galifianakis was the only comedian to neatly side-step the “music” theme, giving the audience a succinct, smooth and flawlessly funny, stand-up set.

Spotted: Adam Sandler, looking happier than he’s seemed in years.

Tim and Eric’s ballsy, bluesy, Cajun rock number detailing the preparation of jambalaya. Die-hard fans were also regaled by the return of the “Shrim Lady,” who added her high pitch screeching to the duo’s set of swaggering, guitar-shred jams.
- The unannounced boyz of The Lonely Island joining festival founders Tenacious D for an epic hip-hop-meets-heavy metal finale. Good times for all.
