Among the many tributes to Whitney Houston comes this surprising performance by rocker Chris Cornell.
The Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman was performing at a fundraiser for President Obama on Thursday night in San Francisco when he delivered a solo acoustic cover of Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.”

A roaring crowd at the 3,100-seat capacity Masonic Auditorium can be heard cheering enthusiastically for the soulful rendition, which marries Cornell’s grunge-grown vocals with melodies from Houston’s version, which was itself an R&B interpretation of a country song originally by Dolly Parton.

Cornell is no stranger to awesome covers. His moody take on Michael Jackson‘s “Billie Jean” is a longtime favorite of fans and even made an appearance on American Idol, when season 7 winner David Cook used it as inspiration for his performance during the Top 10 week of the competition.
